The new Unit was officially opened by Sir Bruce Keough, Medical Director of the NHS.
Our reason for being invited was that Highcliffe School had been asked if we might have some artwork to provide a stimulating and sympathetic entrance to the Unit.
The Art and Photography team worked with Dr Damian Jenkinson at the Unit to display the impressive photograph.
The obvious choice was a long panoramic image Alex had created last year. The original picture (hanging in the entrance to Da Vinci) is made up of 47 separate photographs of Stanpit Marsh, all stitched together to create a 2 metre long panorama. To create the piece for the Hospital the original was enlarged to nearly 7 ½ metres’ length and printed directly onto acrylic. To create the final masterpiece we worked with the specialist printers Visual Impulse of Wallisdown.
The hospital are delighted with the final result saying “the new Unit was about rehabilitating patients back to their homes and the photograph is a great reminder for them of the world outside the hospital”. The photograph combines the panoramic views of the local coastline with careful attention to detail and some quite moving colours.
The new Stroke Unit is a pioneering development in the rapid treatment and care of patients in this field of medicine. Alex and the staff at Highcliffe are privileged to have been involved working with the hospital staff on this project and look forward to further collaborative ventures in the future.
Alex is studying A Levels in Art & Design, Graphics and Photography. He is hoping to gain very high grades and plans to progress to study for his degree at the prestigious Arts University College Bournemouth next year.
