Computing Ambassadors at Bletchley Park

Sixth Form Computing Ambassadors lead visit to Bletchley Park, home of the Enigma Machine.

Year 10 and 11 Computing students were privileged to experience what it was like to punch down the keys of a real Enigma Machine. Students learnt how the enigma machines worked, with their 3 rotors, each with the 26 letters of the alphabet. For each letter used in the encrypted message there were 139 quintillion (139,000,000,000,000,000,000) possible outcomes.

The Hall itself currently houses film set props, memorabilia and video interviews from the 2014 thriller ‘The Imitation Game’, which was a draw for our pupils!

In addition to the main Hall, the students visited the huts, outhouses and museums showing all aspects of life at Bletchley during the war and the equipment (and carrier pigeons) used to help crack the codes.

The exhibits help you to imagine what it was like for those academics to work so intensely and in absolute secrecy, plus highlight Alan Turing’s pioneering contribution to cryptanalysis and computer science.
