We recently had the opportunity to host the students and staff from Hiroshima Johoku Senior High School (Japan) in one of our year 9 graphics lessons. An excellent and rewarding time was had by all involved. Students and staff experienced first-hand an introduction to the forming of a range of origami outcomes, as well as experimenting in the art form of Japanese calligraphy.
The boys from Johoku School helped Highcliffe students understand some of the written forms and characters; after instruction, handing over the brushes and allowing Highcliffe students to have a go at replicating these forms for themselves.
I would like to thank the staff and students from Hiroshima Johoku Senior High School for the enrichment they shared with our graphics students. We hope that in the future more of these experiences could be shared, linking our communities and widening our cultural understanding and experiences.
