Upon arrival at Hiroshima, the host families were there to greet us. My host buddy, Tomohiro, and his mother greeted me warmly. Their house was a modern, wooden build. Unfortunately for me, the height of the doors was about 5’10ft and I was 6’0ft. Banging my head was very common!
During the week, we attended a variety of classes at Johoku School, such as kendo (Japanese Sword class). Johoku School also laid on some interesting activities, including kimono-wearing and a visit to the local kindergarten, which was a real highlight!
We also visited various monuments and locations such as the beautiful island of Miyajima, and the A- Bomb Museum. In Kyoto, we visited a Zen garden and The Golden Temple, which were breath-taking and awe-inspiring.
In short, I have been very fortunate to visit one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I have developed an appreciation of another culture, very different from our own - and a love of sushi! I have gained a close bond with both English and Japanese students. The generosity of the people is quite overwhelming and I thank them for their kindness and hospitality.

A friend for the future …
Would you be interested in hosting a Japanese student? In March 2017, Highcliffe will be welcoming 14 students from Johoku School. If you would you like to get to know about another culture and give them an experience of our culture, why not take the opportunity to host one?
Jack Ogden hosted one last year and this is what he had to say:
“I would strongly recommend hosting Japanese student if you get the opportunity. The students are polite and come with the intention of enjoying themselves. They slot easily into your weekly routine and are enthusiastic about family life.”
