STEM action for our Y10 scientists
On the 20th June, twenty four year 10 Triple Science students took part in a STEM chemistry workshop ran by Miss Burgess.
Students had to complete a three stage chemical extraction, using the bark from a willow tree to remove the chemical compound salicin; the known active compound used to make the pain killer aspirin. The extracted compounds have been sent off to a commercial spectroscopy laboratory where they will be tested for their purity. The results will be analysed in the autumn term. The activity had a positive response from the pupils and will help students realise the importance of medicinal research and chemistry as a potential career pathway.
“Today gave me a great insight into the world of pharmaceutical chemistry”
Sam Grant and Dane Major
“Today we learnt how to extract aspirin from willow bark. We feel as though it has been a really valuable experience which will help us immensely to prepare for A Level Chemistry and beyond at higher education”
Jane Mitchell, Daniel Esterhuizen and Elena Carter
