Students were given information about applying to Universities in general, as well as the Oxford and Cambridge difference. They were then taken on a tour of the College by a current second year Biology student.
Founded in 1264, Merton is arguably the oldest Oxford College, and is steeped in History – during the Civil War it held the Queen’s Court, and it counts J R R Tolkien, C S Lewis and T S Elliott as past alumni or professors!
Students had a session at the Pitt Rivers anthropology museum, where they were given a chance to practice for the ‘artefact interview’ – learning how to extract information when given just one object.
Following the trip, students said it helped dispel some of the myths that you need lots of money to go to Oxford, and that despite it feeling like “a magical place”, applying to Oxford or Cambridge feels much more accessible.
Thank you very much to Mr O’Connor for accompanying us, and to all the students who made it such an enjoyable day.
