Overview

Building a foundation of knowledge on; materials, manufacturing processes, systems, testing and investigating methods and modern technologies, alongside practical engineering skills. Developing student problem-solving abilities, applying practical engineering to designing and making imaginative prototypes that resolve real and relevant engineering problems. This course is suited to those who enjoy mathematical challenges, using equations and interpreting data to understand the functions of materials and their appropriate uses. Preparing your understanding in readiness for the written exam element and beyond into exciting career prospects.

Why should I study this course?

If you have a passion for knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes with some elements of practical application to demonstrate understanding and a drive to have a career in the engineering industry, then this course might be right for you.


What knowledge and/or skills will I need?

Students must demonstrate they have a genuine passion for Design with an inquisitive, creative mind and the desire to further their knowledge and understanding within the subject. It is essential that they enjoy working in a wide variety of materials with the ability to take risks and work independently. Students must also demonstrate a mathematical ability in order to solve equations and effectively test the abilities of materials.


What will I study in this qualification?

You will study; Engineering materials, Engineering manufacturing processes, Systems, Testing and investigation, The impact of modern technologies and Practical engineering skills.


How will I be assessed?

Sections 1–6 from the subject content. Though the 'Practical engineering skills' section will predominantly be assessed through the NEA (non-exam assessment), some questions in the written exam will relate to practical contexts and students will need to apply their understanding within these contexts.
